In today’s creative podcast I talked about setting some creative goals for myself.
In the past I would always create goals that were daily. It would be something like write 5 pages or creative one journal page, work for 30 minutes on project “x.”
It never really worked for me.
I cannot tell you that I have completed any particular project simply by doing so much every day without fail.
Probably because I didn’t do it without fail. Life would happen, I would get busy, not feel like it that day etc. and the first time I missed a day I felt as if I had failed.
One of the biggest projects I accomplished was the NaNoWriMo challenge to write 50,000 words in one month. In 2011 I completed the challenge and finished my second book. Looking back, I believe the reason I was successful was because it was a cumualitive goal. Of course the first thing I did was sit down and figure out how many words I had to write per day but after the first week when I missed a day here and there I just had to look at the total needed. Granted I was writing until about 11pm on the last day but I have always preferred cramming in a lot of work in a short time-it keeps me sharp.
My latest projects are to edit my book and to continue working on my newest book so I decided to take today and determine what my goals would be. Of course my first thought was to break it down to pages/day and I am grateful that I paused before determining my goal. I wanted to really sit with the goal, I wanted to take the time and feel what Ihope to accomplish. I wanted to connect with the project and feel it’s importance to me. So often I think I get caught up in what a goal should look like, what an accomplishment should be. I rarely ever stop and think what those things are for me.
What if for me an accomplishment is editing 3 pages a week? Is that less of an accomplishment because someone else can do that in an hour? I don’t live the life of someone else I live my life and in my life editing sucks so 3 pages a week without throwing my laptop across the room-that’s an accomplishment.
So how do we connect with the energy of our projects? How do we determine what we want from the project, what we hope for it what that looks like?
