For this poem I thought back to something that had actually happened a few weeks ago. My husband, daughter and I went for an impromptu lunch and we weren’t there long when an older gentleman was seated next to us. Alone, he had brought a newspaper and ended up chatting with us and my 1 year-old daughter. For everyone, I think, it turned out to be a nice afternoon.
He sits down with newspaper in hand
a quiet lunch planned alone
She smiles at him-as she does
her child-like innocence pulls him in
The light of a little girl
opens his heart
We share our lunch
at separate tables but together
Perhaps all a little lighter
sharing some time
The world
made a bit smaller
