So for today’s Spread the Love Challenge I am writing about the man I saw over the weekend while I was shopping with the family at one of those “let’s buy everything in bulk stores.” The store is nice because they have quite a bit of organic food which I like and you don’t have to be a member to go and look around or to shop. It was a very cold day but as is the normal they were offering free samples of food.
And that was where I first noticed him. He was waiting patiently in line for a sample, heavy coat, hat and no cart. The look in his eyes was what first caught my attention and I just knew that he needed the samples. I had hoped for a sign, a way to help him and I turned the corner hoping to maybe help in some small way. I never saw him again.
This poem is for him:
He walks from stand to stand
coat buttoned hat on
Trying to blend into the crowds
their carts full with food in bulk
He takes a sample of food
cupping it in worn hands
Grateful to have something to eat
in a warm place for a while
I look at my full cart
feeling grateful and yet so small
Wishing I could help him
as he disappears from view
I send to him love and light
and a future that’s bright and warm
Motivated to help in some way
even if I couldn’t help him
